Acrylic Sealers for Concrete Floors

Looking for a floor with long-term protection and beauty? Acrylic sealers for concrete provide both. Acrylic sealers work by forming a protective film on the surface of concrete, which helps prevent water penetration and other issues with concrete such as efflorescence. Stain-resistance and color enhancements are two more benefits of acrylic sealers for concrete.

Penetrating sealers, on the other hand, don’t form a film but react with the concrete from within to offer protection. This still leaves the surface of the concrete vulnerable to damage from chipping or cracking. Acrylic sealers are a preferred choice because the coating works from the outside to protect the concrete.

Acrylic sealers for concrete are easy to apply. They can be either rolled on or sprayed with minimal prep to the concrete surface. Another benefit of acrylic sealers for concrete is that 100 percent acrylic sealers are UV-resistant and won’t break down when exposed to sunlight. These sealers can even be used on driveways to provide hot-tire resistance.

When acrylic sealers are applied to concrete, any color that is on the concrete is enhanced and protected. Thanks to the UV-resistance, your colored concrete won’t fade, and the sealers can be used on both interior or exterior concrete. The coatings can be either high-gloss, offering a wet-look finish, or a low-gloss. Solvent-based acrylic sealers and epoxies enhance color and look “wet,” while water-based acrylic sealers offer a satiny sheen and more natural finished appearance.

Acrylic sealers for concrete can be either water- or solvent-based, and both function in similar ways. They are applied the same way, and can be used on both new or old concrete. Silane- or siloxane-based penetrating sealers cannot be applied to new concrete until it is fully cured, typically 28 days, which can leave the porous surface of the concrete vulnerable in the meantime.

If for some reason you want to remove your acrylic sealer coating from your concrete, you can, by using a solvent such as xylene. Other sealers require sandblasting or harsh chemicals, and penetrating sealers cannot be removed completely because they form a chemical bond with the concrete.

Given the fact that acrylic sealers for concrete are shown to provide all of these benefits for two to three years, chances are once you decide to protect your concrete with acrylic you won’t want to remove it or go back to any other method of protection.
