Retail Store Floor Design Ideas

Retail Store Floor Design Ideas by Duraamen

Retail store design always begins with the floor. The look, color, design and shine set the tone for the rest of the space and accessories. One of the biggest mistakes made with design is to consider the flooring last.

Our concrete products are unique for creating curb appeal. We have 4 main decorative concrete coatings that can be customized to create any design while providing durability and low maintenance.

We have 3 overlays and metallic epoxy coatings that have been used in thousands of  stores, art galleries and restaurants.

  1. Param Self Leveling Concrete – Our self leveling overlays can be applied over existing concrete and tile at a thickness of 1/4-1/2 inch thick. This is an ideal system when you need to customize the height to match door jams, floor vents, adjacent flooring like tile or hardwood or just to create an even surface. Param can be integrally colored with custom designs like you see here.
  2. Pentimento – If you are looking for a polished concrete appearance with a high end decor, Pentimento is an ideal option. Many of our artistic contractors prefer Pentimento for it’s natural marbleized polished look. It really adds a unique decor to any retail space.
  3. Sgraffino – This is one of our most popular overlays due to it’s ease of application and artistic possibilities. Sgarffino can be applied with integral colors and topically stained and dyed. Many of our contractors will use saw cuts to create the appearance of custom tile and borders. As with all our overlays, they can be sealed with our water based epoxies with a final polyurethane top coat.
  4. Metallic Epoxy – Everyone loves the look of our Lumiere Metallic Epoxy Coatings. In addition to exceptional durability, they have a unique marbleized appearance. There are unlimited design possibilities using Lumiere Metallics.

Epoxy Coatings Restore Philadelphia Concrete Floor

Epoxy Coatings

This is a project completed by Evans Construction Services at a winery in the Philadelphia area using epoxy coatings to reseal the decorative stained concrete floor.

Originally the floor was sealed with an acrylic sealer which could not withstand the high amount of foot traffic. After a year, the flooring needed a new high performance coating.

The process of resealing worked out very well. Evans Construction lightly sanded the worn acrylic sealer, then they applied our Perdure E02 clear 100% solids epoxy. This product works as a durable, high performance primer.

The top coat applied was out Perdure U50 polyurethane. This is a 2 component finish coat that will withstand the most abrasive foot traffic with long term durability. It is resistant to chemicals ill and easy to maintain. Many of our clients have applied Perdure U50 to protect floors in warehouses, garages, airplane hangars, repair shops and other industrial facilities.

If your floor needs a resealing solution, contact us to discuss the condition of your floor. We have many sealers and epoxy coatings that solve a myriad of flooring problems.

Benefits and Advantages Of Concrete Polishing

Benefits and Advantages of Concrete Polishing

Benefits of Concrete Polishing

Concrete is used in a wide variety of different applications, from a concrete highway to a building’s foundation. However, concrete is also useful as a flooring choice. Its incredibly strong molecular structure makes it suitable for industrial and business flooring applications, especially if heavy equipment will be driven across it, such as forklifts. But, what if it could be enhanced to have an aesthetically appealing appearance, much like marble floors? Concrete polishing is the answer.

Concrete polishing is the process of grinding down the bare surface with various blade sizes, much like sanding a piece of wood. Workers will bring in grinding machines and affix a rough blade to the grinder mechanism. This blade will pass along the concrete surface which will slowly chip away the top layer or layers. Depending on the concrete’s quality, the machine will pass over multiple times with increasingly smaller blade sizes; the fine polishing will produce an incredibly smooth surface. A liquid densifyer may be applied afterward to create a glossy sheen and add strength to the porous concrete.

Benefits and Advantages of Concrete Polishing

Where would concrete polishing applications be appropriate? Almost any concrete floor can be polished, if desired. Older concrete, as well as overlays and self leveling concrete, can be easily replenished with a polishing job. Retail spaces enjoy the tough flooring since foot traffic will not damage it like other floor covering choices. Industrial companies cannot lay hardwood or linoleum; concrete is their best choice for a durable floor option. Even homeowners enjoy polished concrete for its durability, as well as its variety of color choices.

Color choices? Isn’t concrete just gray, you may ask? In fact, concrete polishing professionals can easily dye or stain the concrete after the polishing is complete. Similar to picking a paint tone, there is a large choice of colors for concrete, from red to beige. Depending on the contractor, the dye or stain can be applied through a powdered material or liquid concentration. Once it dries, it can be buffed into a matte or gloss finish, based on the customer’s desires.

Engravings can also be added to the polished concrete floor for an added flair. Many businesses choose this option so that their logo can be permanently etched into the concrete for a fashionable and unique advertising strategy. Homeowners may want a more decorative look by adding flower shapes or abstract designs.

Why do many consumers choose to polish their concrete? Although concrete is naturally strong, polishing off the top layer of the flooring increases the molecular strength after it is densified. As a result, the concrete is not as permeable to damaging grease or food items. In addition, room lighting is enhanced from the reflective surface of the concrete, even if it has a matte finish. Do you have a tendency to fall on slippery floor types, such as vinyl? Even after concrete polishing, the floor retains enough friction for a safe walking area.

If you are interested in concrete polishing your floors, give us a call to discuss the options and the appropriate system and professional to help you with your project. Contact us for concrete products in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania Ohio and Arizona.

Decorative Concrete Floors for New Jersey Restaurants and Commercial Kitchens

Decorative Concrete Floors For Restaurants in New Jersey

Decorative Concrete Floors For New Jersey Restaurants

Concrete floors in restaurants can be a challenging choice for many reasons. One of the biggest issues is the performance of the floor once the restaurant is open for business. If the floor does not hold up to the harsh abuse from foot traffic, grease, liquids like coffee, soda or alcohol, the replacement option becomes extremely expensive. The loss of shutting down for a week to replace the flooring is a tough cost to recover.

How To Resurface Gypcrete With a Duraamen Concrete Overlay

Very few products have the ability to perform over gypcrete. Gypcrete is the industry brand name for Gypsum Concrete. This is a product used as an underlayment for hardwood, tile or carpet. With our products, concrete overlays can be added to the list. Gypcrete is a lightweight product but very porous and typically soft. However over the years the PSI has increased.

Resurface Gypcrete By Seattle Surfaces of Seattle Washington

The project was completed for Five Fish Bistro Restaurant by Seattle Surfaces owned by Dave Primc. The 2,000 square foort restaurant was designed by Arellano Christofides Architects PLLC also of Seattle.

When apply Sgraffino to resurface gycrete, we require that the Gypsum Concrete has a PSI of 3,500 otherwise there is a risk of pinholes bleeding through the surface.

Sgraffino is an amazing product for resurfacing concrete and many other substrates. When properly primed, the sgraffino has exceptional bonding characteristics. In fact, Sgraffino has been used to resurface porcelain bathtubs that are used daily, holding up to water, soap and shampoo without delamination.

When resurfacing gypcrete, the process is extra priming with CP 1000 our priming polymer. In this case, 3 coats of sgraffino were applied using our Potters Clay integral colorant. As you can see in the photos, the result is excellent. The floor is seamless, non slip and easy to maintain. It is durable enough to endure the heavy wear and tear of a restaurant.

The seal coats used was our Perdure E32 Water Based Epoxy with Perdure U50 90% solids moisture cured polyuretnae, an exceptionally durable top coat.

Omaha Nebraska Decorative Concrete Flooring by Serfacewerks

Omaha Nebraska Decorative Concrete Flooring

Omaha Nebraska Decorative Concrete Flooring

Decorative Concrete Flooring by Serfacewerks of Omaha Nebraska

Serfaceweks of Omaha Nebraska owned by Matthew Dethlefs completed this basement floor restoration using our Sgraffino decorative concrete flooring system. Sgraffino is an excellent cementitious overlay that has been used on thousands of floors worldwide.

About Sgraffino Decorative Concrete Flooring

Sgraffino is a thin concrete coating that is applied by trowel resulting in a sandstone finish. It is smooth with subtle variation. As a result it is ideal for topical stains and dyes producing a marblized appearance. It can be applied directly over concrete, self leveling concrete, wood, tile and formica. It can be applied vertically and has been used for walls, countertops and interior of showers.

In this project it was used to resurface a basement floor that was in rough shape. After completing the surface prep process, 3 coats of Sgraffino were applied using the first coat in our regular grade followed by 1 coat of fine and afinal coat using super fine. After the coats were dry, Burlywood , a light brown earth tone dye was applied. As you can see in the final photo, the result looks like a natural granite/marble appearance.

To complete the project and protect the surface, water based sealers were applied. The sealers provide long term protection while enhancing the visual appearance of the floor.

Concord New Hampshire Concrete Floor Epoxy Repair

Concrete Floor Epoxy Repair

Concrete Floor Epoxy Repair

Concrete Floor Epoxy Repair Solutions – A Concord New Hampshire Project

We get the calls all the time. “we had epoxy coatings applied to our concrete and it’s peeling off the floor” or “we applied epoxy paint to our garage floor and it’s chipping”.

The reality is that epoxy repair is a cottage industry. Many people think applying epoxy paint is a simple process. Just mix part A with part B and roll it on. That’s true, it’s easy. Usually it looks great… for a few days. Thats exactly what happened in to this garage floor project in Concord New Hampshire.

Epoxy Repair – The Problem and Solution

The owners hired an inexperienced contractor. The first problem was the floor was not properly prepared. Concrete floors need to be shotblasted or ground using special concrete grinding equipment. This process serves a few purposes. It removes potential bond breakers and increases the amount of surface area for coating adhesion.

The second problem was that the epoxy was not properly mixed. If epoxies are not properly mixed, the chemical crosslinking will break down. In this case the coating was still soft many days after application.

The only solution is cases like this one is to grind the old coating off the surface and start over. Since the original contractor ran off, the owner had already paid for the project with little money left in the budget to resurface with a new epoxy.

The solution was to grind and remove the failed coating then polish and dye the concrete. The project was completed properly Premier Concrete Construction of Wilton New Hampshire.

If you are faced with an epoxy repair solution like this one in Concord, New Hampshire, contact us and explain the situation. We’ll help you with the most appropriate products and a professional installer in your area.
